The HPC Fire Pit Insert provides a safe, easy and fast way to install a custom fire pit. The high quality Stainless Steel Penta Burner and Stainless Steel pan is made to stand up to harshest outdoor environments. These fire pits incorporate the latest and most reliable ignition and safety features available on the market today and they are CSA & ANZI certified allowing you to choose from 65,000 BTUs all the way up to 400,000 BTU burners. At the heart of the system is a new 120V ignition system that is controlled by a switch, timer or remote control. The brain of the system is the Thermocouple that senses the internal and external temperatures to control the flow of gas. If the burner is blown out the system will shutdown and begin to relight. This safety feature makes it perfect for Homeowners and Commercial applications. The Ignition system is combined with the Penta Burner that offers a very unique and innovative burner design and delivers a very full campfire effect…much more evident than any other burner or fire ring on the market. This is accomplished by the 12 & 3 o’clock burner ports on each lobe of the burner (except on the lobe tips) by design to reduce risk of excessive heat exposure to enclosure cap. ON/OFF or HI/LO explained: The “ON/OFF” variation of this burner kit will require an external switch, timer, or optional remote (SKU: 578-C) to operate ( Not Included), while a remote control is included for the “HI/LO” variation. The “HI/LO” version of this burner kit is also Bluetooth compatible with the HPC smartphone app for added convenience. HI/LO units offer two flame height selections for user customizability. The “HI” setting offers maximum flame height and power, while the “LO” setting cuts the flame by 40 percent. In addition, the phone app allows on/off, timer, and troubleshooting functionality.
120VAC Or 24V Explained: This unit can be purchased as a 120 VAC unit and comes pre-wired with a standard three-prong plug-in for use in a GFI outlet. Alternatively, a 24 VAC unit requires an external power supply to operate (sold separately) these units are often used where it is more difficult to run line voltage or there is a water feature near by.
Penta Standard Burner or Torpedo Penta Burner Explained: The Penta Burner features more even fuller more even flame from the outer edge to a slighter taller center flame. The Torpedo burner produces large bonfire-like natural flames with the jetted port holes in the burner that are guaranteed to provide a whistle-free experience. The Torpedo Burner also generates more horizontal heat outward since the flames are being pushed with force. The spokes of both the Penta standard burner and the Torpedo Penta burner rise up to the center at an angle, allowing water to easily roll off of the burner and not get into the gas line through the drilled port holes.

How it Works/FAQ
The control of your fire pit is very important to keeping people safe and enjoying your fire feature. The HPC Electronic Ignition (EI) models can be controlled with several different methods:
Control Options:
Install an on/off switch in a NEMA approved enclosure on the side of the enclosure or on a wall, post or a nearby area.
Install an electrical timer switch in a NEMA approved enclosure on the side of the enclosure or on a wall, post or a nearby area.
Install an outdoor rated on/off remote.
Install a relay from your Home Automation System or Pool Control System.
Install a FireLock Controller to offer access to people that are authorized to use the fire feature and also allow the days and times of usage.
The HPC Electronic Ignition (Hi/Lo) models can be controlled with several different methods:
Use the HPC Hi/Lo Remote, or down load the Phone application and use the app.
How it works
Start Up: This is done by use of a wall switch or remote control (or smart phone on Hi/Lo Models). When the ON command is received, the system completes initial safety checks then starts flow of pilot gas. After 5 seconds the hot surface igniter glows igniting pilot flame. When the system confirms pilot flame present, the main burner gas will flow ignited by the pilot flame.
Operation: While enjoying the ambiance of your fire pit, the system is at work monitoring flame status, internal temperatures / voltages and other safety parameters. If flame loss does occur, the system will turn off all gas flow, and then restart by automatically commencing Start sequence.
Shut Down: To turn OFF the fire pit simply use wall switch, remote control or smart phone.
On/Off Models: Includes the convenience and safety features- optional remote control available. High / Low Flame Control Models: This option includes a remote control and smart phone app with 2-way communication with the fire pit. Remote allows flame height control while receiving information from fire pit to advise user of fire pit status (flashing LED).

Fuel line sizing is the responsibility of the installer and must be able to supply the stated maximum BTU for the product-refer to product label on fire pit.
120V/24V Electrical Requirments:
Verify correct 110VAC-1 amp power supply. All electronic applications should utilize a GFCI protected circuit.
24 Volt systems are available if there is a water feature near by. The 24V transformer will plug into a 120V – GFCI protected outlet, if a switch is needed the switch should be located on the 120V side of the electrical line.
Selecting the Location
All fire pit inserts and systems are designed and intended for outdoor use only.
Pick a location that allows sufficient horizontal room and safe egress to enjoy the fire pit while allowing a safe distance from the heat and flame.
IMPORTANT:Deck Installation-If installing fire pit on a woodor composite deck it is required to use the Deck Insulation Kit.
There must be an electrical shut off (wall switch or breaker) on the exterior of the fire pit or on adjacent wall to allow for emergency shutdown and maintenance.
CLEARANCES AROUND FIRE PIT:
Construction of the Fire Pit Enclosure
Use non-combustible materials for construction of enclosure, gas supply and power.
Adequate drainage for enclosure must be provided to prevent water damage to fire pit.
The fire pit insert should be recessed a minimum of 2” from the top of the enclosure to protect flame from being blown out.
The enclosure must be constructed on a stable surface. The weight of the fire pitmust be supported by the pan and not by any control/valve box.Make sure that the structure is level.
Fire pit insert must be accessible for service.
VENTING
IMPORTANT:The minimum requirement is the enclosure incorporate 1 vent on at least 2 sides (2 vents total) at a minimum size of 18 sq. inches of total free area each (Example: 3”x 6” or larger) to ensure that heat and residual gas can escape.We prefer the enclosure incorporate 4 vents total (minimum 18 sq. inches each side) to reduce the risk of thermal shutdown on the EI Series-some enclosures may require more ventilation based on material, size and extended use.Installation of the vents in the mid to lower area of the enclosure is recommended. Failure to properly vent enclosure may result in the fire pit overheating or explosion. Continuous overheating could lead to heat damage to internal components. The vent may work as a drain as well when installed at bottom sidewall to prevent water build up.
The interior void space of the enclosure surrounding the valve box cannot be filled with any material (gravel, crushed rock, concrete, etc.)-It is a requirement to have a minimum of 2” under the valve box for proper ventilation and drainage.
Building A Gas Fire Pit
(Step 1) Choosing the Right Burner
The Fire Pit Burner is the heart of the system, the burner will determine the size and shape of the fire pit. The burner regulates how much gas will be burned, the appearance of the flame, and how much heat and even the shape and height of the flame. Since there are many different styles and sizes this is where an expert can help guide you. Quality burners are tested and have safety certifications. At this time AOK only sells and stocks CSA Certified burners for your protection and safety. It is important to select the burner before the construction of the fire pit enclosure. The burner selection will determine the size and shape of the custom enclosure. More on the burners below…
Gas Type
The first choice in selecting a fire pit burner is to decide what gas type is best for the application and budget. Both Liquid Propane (LP) and Natural Gas (NG) burners are available and the burner must be ordered correctly for the type of gas being used. NG is typically piped from the street to a manifold that distributes the gas throughout the house and to your fire pit. LP gas is fed from tanks of various sizes which can be above ground or under ground. Smaller 20lb propane bottles can only support fire pits up to 85,000 BTUs, if you want a higher BTU burner you will need to install a larger tank. We recommended that a licensed professional determine the total amount of BTUs (Volume) your gas supply lines will support and also to size and install any gas appliance in accordance with local codes for safety. Once the gas type and volume is known then the ignition, size and shape can be chosen.
Ignition System
We offer three (3) CSA Certified Ignition Systems. CSA certification is the highest certification and is accepted by all government agencies that require UL and ANSI stamps. MATCH-LIT burners are the simplest technology and are certified up to 65,000 BTUS. Using a match, the fire is lit and the gas feed is manually adjusted to regulate flame height. PUSH BUTTON SPARK burners are certified up to 140,000 BTUs. Push button spark burners use a battery to ignite the flame and do not require electricity. They have a flame sensing control to turn off the gas should the flame blow out. ELECTRONIC IGNITION or Hot Wire Ignition (HWI) is certified up to 400,000 BTUs. Ignition is controlled from a 120V switch located near the fire pit and may also be controlled by a remote. This automated system includes a flame sensor to detect heat which will shut off the gas should the flame blow out. One awesome thing about HWI is the ability to control the fire pit from a good distance away from the burner, making it safer and more comfortable to lite the burner. Also, HWI is available in a 24 volt system when installations for fire pits are located close to water features.
Note: Picking the Right Burner:
Picking the right burner size can be intimidating, but there are some guidelines that can help make your decision faster and easier. The size of your fire pit pan should always be smaller than the inside diameter of your fire pit enclosure. We recommend that the plate size should be 2-3 inches smaller than the opening, so a 36 inch plate would be used in a 38-42 inch opening.
About the Burner Pan
All of the burners that AOK provides come with Stainless Steel pans that hold the burners. The burners are typically 6” shorter than the pan, except for the linear burners with trough pans. These pans sit directly below your burner, to provide support and proper placement for the components. We highly recommend purchasing fire pit burners with the pan and here’s why:
•The pan ensures that unburned gas doesn’t puddle below the burner, causing a safety issue and hazzard
•They provide a support for your burner ring, ensuring that it is level and mounted at all times. • They drastically reduce the amount of fire pit media required.
• Pans also help the water drainage in your fire pit by keeping the burner off the media.
Burner Shape
Round fire pit burners with round pans are the most common and make a good shape for conversation pits. Sizes range from 12” to 54”. Over the years square pits have become more popular with sizes ranging from 12-24”. There are many other shapes such as linear shape burners that make a dramatic statement. Once a shape is determined it is time to pick the style and size. This will ultimately tell you the shape and size of your fire pit enclosure.
Size and BTUs
The size of the fire pit burner is going to determine the BTUs as well. The larger the burner the higher the BTUs. This is an important step since this will determine how much impact and heat will be given off. Burners that produce less than 75,000 BTUs are generally used in smaller fire tables and premade fire pits. Burners that produce 100-150,000 BTUs produce a nice flame and are usually in the 24-30” range. The burners that I recommend are in the next range between 200-250,000 BTUs and 31-37” in diameter. These burners produce a full flame and give off enough heat to keep you warm on cooler nights. At AOK we carry a full range of burners that are certified up to our 400,000BTU burner.
(Step 2) The Enclosure
Once a burner has been selected, the size and shape of the enclosure can be determined. This is your chance to get creative….
Enclosure Shape & Materials
The Enclosure or the Fire Pit Shell contains the fire pit burner insert. The enclosure can be round, square, rectangular, or linear in shape, custom shapes are also a possibility but can be very challenging to construct. When constructing an enclosure great care should be taken when selecting the location. A perimeter of at least 4 feet around the fire pit is necessary for safe travel and seating. The height of the fire pit can vary, but it is typically a minimum of 18″ from the floor to the top of the burner with the cap of the fire pit above the burner, check the fire pit burner insert clearances before setting the final height. For the frame many building materials are available for the enclosure construction, including cement block, steel and aluminum studs. Use only non-combustible materials.
Drains, Air Vents & Shut Offs
Drainage is very important, so provide a way for the water to escape from the enclosure either by natural means or via central drain. Water trapped in the enclosure or in the media or around the burner is dangerous and will not smell good when the fire pit is lit. IMPORTANT!!! One of the most overlooked features of fire pit construction are the air vents. Air Vents provide ventilation so the proper fuel/air mixture can be achieved. Without the proper fuel mixture the fire will burn too rich creating a gas smell or too lean starving the flames. Equally as important, the vents provide a way for excess gas to escape. Without proper venting, a small leak under a fire pit burner can cause an explosion. Two to three air vents at the bottom of the enclosure in addition to a drain are recommended. Most fire pit burners require 36 sq. inches of venting total for proper venting. Most local codes will require a gas shut off device that is located within 3-6 feet of the pit for emergencies and repairs. Check with the local authorities or your license professional for the exact codes.
Construction
It is important when constructing a custom fire pit to make sure the fire pan can be easily removed. The pan should never be “locked” into place with mortar or the stone cap. The cap should also be properly spaced from the fire to prevent it from getting too hot, which may cause it to crack or explode. We recommend a 4-6″ space from the outer edge of the pan to the inner edge of the cap with the burner placed at the same level or lower than the bottom of the top cap, this helps protect the fire from being blown out by high winds. The fire pan must be properly suspended without media or filler beneath. The area under the fire pan should be open to allow for air to enter through the vents.
The Finishing Touches
Fire pit finishes must be made from a non- combustible material such as Stone, Stucco, Brick or Tile. There are also copper bowls and many other pre-made enclosures to choose from.
(Step 3) “Top It Off”
The Media you choose to cover the insert has a significant impact on both the overall look and impact of the fire pit and how the flame behaves. Lets look at some of the choices below and their characteristics….
The Media
It is important to use media that is designed for fire pit use, using stones and materials not designed for high heat can explode and create shrapnel. DECORATIVE FIRE GLASS – For a more contemporary look, Comes in a lot of different colors and sizes. For best results use 3-4″ to cover the burners. Note: AOK doesn’t recommend using glass over another media such as lava rock. Lava rock must be able to breath and allow the moisture to escape, using glass or another media over the lava rock can cause the moisture to be trapped in the lava rock that can produce steam that can expand and lead to explosions. LAVA ROCK – Used alone or as a base for outdoor fire logs. Lava rock is proven to increase performance but will break down over time. ROLLED LAVA STONE – Give you fire pit a oriental look. Lava stone can also be used around the burners and then combined with Lava Rock for a really cool look. RIVER ROCK – Lightweight ceramic stones “gel cast” and designed for outdoor exposure. comes in different colors. OUTDOOR FIRE LOGS – Made of gel cast ceramic fiber, log sets will glow red where the fire is hottest and radiate the heat outward for the warmest fire pit.

Hearth Products Controls Company warranties product against manufacturing defects that prevent safe and correct operation of the product commencing from the date of original sale / shipment from HPC. The warranty on parts and in-house labor will apply only to claims presented to us by our original customer and is in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Please refer to the Warranty Chart below for warranty periods.
The defective product must be shipped back with an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) issued by HPC for that specific product which states the nature of the defect or warranty claim. Product to be returned should be packed carefully—HPC is not responsible for damage on returned items. The original purchase information will be required. RMA’s are only valid for 30 days from the date of issue by HPC and will not be processed if received after the expiration date. The RMA number must be indicated on the outside of the return package and a copy of the RMA in the package with product.
Our warranty does not cover items that have been damaged by over heating, modification, abuse, improper storage, installation, or maintenance. This warranty excludes claims for incidental or consequential damage and indirect-collateral expenses arising from product defects or warranty recovery.
